How to Apply

Thank you for your interest
in the Genomic Sciences Graduate program at NC State University! This information is intended to help you in the application process.

Admission to graduate programs at NC State University is competitive. Selection depends on evaluation of each student's preparation, ability, and potential to engage in graduate work.

Admission to full graduate standing requires at least the following:

  • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • 3.0 average in the undergraduate major or latest graduate degree program
  • Graduate Record Examination scores
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL) scores unless the applicant has already completed, with acceptable grades, at least one year of full-time study in a degree program at a four-year U.S. college or university; or the applicant is from Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom
  • Three references from people who know the applicant's academic record and potential for graduate study
  • Statement of Purpose and career goals

New Student Applicants (please follow these steps to apply for the program)

Graduate School Application & Application Fee

Effective immediately, you must submit your application on-line. North Carolina State University no longer accepts hard-copy application forms. Your Statment of Purpose, resume, and recommendation forms should also be submitted online using the Apply Yourself application system.

Please complete the application process following the instructions provided. You will need to indicate Genomic Sciences - Bioinformatics or Genomic Sciences - Functional Genomics, in the Desired Major section. The Department and College sections should be left blank.

The Graduate School requires payment of either a $65 application fee for U.S. citizens & Permanent Residents or $75 application fee for Non-Resident Aliens. Your application and/or suporting documents will not be forwarded to us until the application fee is received and processed by the Graduate School Admissions Office.

Other Application Requirements

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) -we do not require the GRE Subject test
  • Transcripts of all academic work post high school
  • Three letters of reference (submitted online)
  • Statement of Interest (submitted online)
  • Curriculum Vitae-3 pages maximum (not required, but highly suggested and may be submitted online)

Official GRE scores and Official TOEFL scores must be sent electronically to the Graduate School via ETS. Please use 5496 as the Institution Code and leave the Department Code blank, or indicate "any".

Transfer Student Applications

Graduate students enrolled in NC State University who are engaged in genomic sciences research and whose advisors are members of the Genomic Science Faculty have the option of applying for admission to the Genomic Sciences Program. The same admissions criteria will be applied to both new and transfer students. If admitted, transfer students are required to change degree programs and meet all curriculum requirements of the Genomic Sciences Program.

To apply, the following information should be sent to the Director of Genomic Sciences Graduate Program at the address below:

  • A copy of the student's original application to graduate school (including GRE scores, reference letters & transcripts). The student should request these items from their current Director of Graduate Programs
  • A current NC State transcript
  • A Statement of Interest designating either the Bioinformatics or Functional Genomics degree program

Application Deadlines (all applicants)

The deadline for all applicants is January 15, 2008. Applications must be submitted and fees must be received by this time. All required supporting documentation (official GRE scores, official transcripts, reference letters, & statement of interest) must also be received by this date.

The Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics Graduate Programs have Fall admissions only.

Financial Support

There are Genomic Sciences Fellowships available and other means of financial support for the Genomic Sciences Graduate program. Check out the financial support page for more details.
