Asked Questions
What is the institution code for NC State University?
The
institution code is 5496.
What
departmental code should I use for the GRE report?
Genomic Sciences does not have its own code; you should use 5199
("all other departments") or you may indicate "any".
What
code should I use to report TOEFL scores?
Again, Genomic Sciences does not have its own code. Please use
the code for "all other departments not listed" for
these tests. The institution code is 5496.
Can
the application fee be waived?
No, we cannot waive application fees. In order for your application
to be reviewed, your fee must be received AND processed by the
Graduate School Admissions Office before the application deadline.
I
put the wrong department code on my test score request. Will it
still reach you?
Yes. Scores are matched at the Graduate School Admissions
Office by the full name, ID number and/or birth date.
Should
I have recommendations and/or transcripts sent directly to you
or may I include them with my other application materials?
Either way is acceptable, as long as they are in sealed envelopes.
However, we do prefer that you include them with your other application
materials, if at all possible.
I
have a doctorate/M.D./J.D. degree. Do I still need to submit GRE
scores?
Yes. GRE scores are required for all applicants regardless
of prior degrees. This requirement cannot be waived.
How
strict is your deadline?
We
have to adhere to a very strict deadline. All required materials
must be RECEIVED in our office on or before the application deadline
date in order to be considered.
Do
you admit students in the Spring or Summer semester?
No, we only accept applications and admit students for the
Fall semester.
How
can I obtain a hard-copy application packet?
NCSU no longer accepts hard-copy applications. You must apply
online using the "Apply Yourself" system.
My
GRE score(s) won't be reported until after your deadline. Will
you still consider my application?
Applications
completed after the deadline will be considered late and will
not be reviewed unless there is still space available in the program.
If there is no space available, late applications will be denied
without review.
What
is the status of my application? Is my application complete?
It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all materials
reach us by the deadline. The Admissions Committee cannot review your file unless it is considered complete! In order to check your application status, you must log into the Apply Yourself system. Please allow sufficient time for your materials to appear as "received" in Apply Yourself as we must manually update the system. Once your file is considered complete and has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee, you
will be notified of the final decision by the NCSU Graduate School,
via email.
How
is North Carolina residency established?
Tuition and fees are based on residency. Residents of North Carolina
support the University through taxes and thus have lower tuition
than non-residents. If you are a citizen of the US or a Permanent
Resident, it is possible to become a resident of NC after residing
here at least one year. Several other conditions must be met.
Please see http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/grad/students/current/resident.htm
for more information on establishing NC residency. If you are
an International student, you cannot establish residency.

Will
you waive the TOEFL requirement if I have TA experience in the
U.S. or other evidence of excellent English ability from my school/professors?

in the program. If there is no space available, late applications
